Just Wondering...

How long does the conventional wisdom remain that Democrats are in favor of large government while Republican are not? Favor might not be the right word I'm looking for here since it's true that Democrats have a more positive opinion on the ability and necessity for government to tackle problems. But actions speak louder than words...

The last 3 Republican presidents (St Reagan, Bush I: A New Beginning, Worst President Ever) all raised government spending by ridiculous amounts, unprecedented in fact some might correctly say. Clinton, not so much. I know that's limited data but it's what we have that makes recent history (and I would understand if someone wanted to omit The Saint from recent history).

Is it possible for the narrative to ever change based on performance? Or is Diet Pepsi still the right one baby? And will it remain so forever?
