Sparty On!!!

Far be it for me to take pity on Michigan State fans. For I'm a University of Michigan graduate and lifelong fan, growing up 30 minutes from The Big House. And I've always found their fans to be the most obnoxious around. In fact, they were getting up into people faces this weekend in Bloomington. I found it unsettling that too mediocre at best teams would spark such behavior from one side. Yet that's commonplace for Sparty, aloong with the inevitable buring of couches that occurs regardless of victory (just leave them by the curb - trust me, garbage will pick them up).

Yet I am feeling some empathy for them as another one of their "saviors"* bites the dust.

With three games remaining in another disappointing season, Michigan State
has decided that John L. Smith will not return to coach the 2007 season.

Most recently, the Spartans were drubbed 46-21 at Indiana last Saturday.
Michigan State took a 7-0 lead before the Hoosiers scored 46 consecutive points.

For one thing Sparty always has is eternal optimism. Every year is going to be their year. Every coach is going to be THE COACH. Every quarterback is going to be THE GREATEST. All this in the midst of mediocrity or worse. So for a few minutes I'll go to saluting Sparty for firing one of the smallest minds in the college. I can always go back to hating them tomorrow (and especially when they announce their new "savior").

*Sparty tends to elevate every new football coach to mythical stature before they have ever coached a game. They may have been right once, with Nick Saban, though the pro game is tarnishing his wings.
