Cubs Enter Pennant Race

Which one is more unqualified for their job?

Thanks to a 6 game losing streak, the Cubs find themselves in the midst of a pennant race. With 29 games left, the Cubs find themselves 1.5 games behind the Pittsburgh Pirates for last place in the NL Central. They are also 6 games behind the Kansas City Royals for the major league lead in futility. It will be a pressure packed last month of the season. Luckily, the Cubs have the ultimate pressure performer in manager Dusty Baker. You may remember from such collapses as the Giants huge lead in Game 6 against the Angels in the 2002 World Series (the Giants were up 3-2). Or the infamous Bartman game with the Cubs in 2003. And then there's the collapse in 2004 when they lost 5 of 6 to the dregs of the National League and missed the playoffs by a game or two.

It's gotta be encouraging to Cubs fans to see the effort Dusty is putting force to grab hold of the last place mantle. Not only is Dusty starting Freddy Bynum, who would not even make a roster on any other major league club but is a frequent Cubs starter. He's also decided to bat him second - that's called skill. Throw in his reluctance to play Matt Murton over a player whose ceiling is as a 4th outfielder and his ability to seemingly allow Aardsma to pitch everyday. Some people were worried that Dusty would lose his ability when Neifi Perez was traded to the Tigers. Well, now it's clear that both suck. Ever since the trade the Tigers have been in a huge collapse while Dusty has found new ways to confound baseball experts. Really, Freddy Bynum? And you're batting him second?

So as we come down the homestretch I'm preparing myself for a tense month of nonstop baseball futility on the North Side. GO CUBS GO!!!
