Hockey Icon Retires: Steve Yzerman
Over his career Steve scored an impressive 692 goals and 1,755 points, which ranks him the seventh best among all NHL players. Yzerman hoisted the Stanley Cup and impressive three times: 1997,1998, and 2002.
More than the records, Steve Yzerman was a leader who played his heart out every game. Horrific injuries never stopped the captain. After winning the cup and leading Canada to Olympic gold, he underwent a gruesome surgery; his leg bone was sawed in half and realigned just so he could continue playing. He was back the following season leading the team he help build.
Professional sport players come and go, but Yzerman will be remembered fondly in Detroit and in the hockey world. He showcased sportsmanship, humbleness, hard work, and determination. His grit and spirit represents the blue collar spirit of Detroiters. He never complained about the tough times, he just worked harder to overcome the obstacles.
Thank you for the fond memories Stevie. I hope you enjoy your well deserved retirement. I know you will be remembered fondly in hockey town forever.
