Cheap Labor Destroys the American Dream
My great grandparents came over from Poland legally in the late 1800s, hoping for a better life. Before they could make it on the mainland they had to undergo a series of health exams. Luckily they passed, but there was thousands of unfortunates who were sent back to their native lands.
At the time health was a concern when it came to border security. Today it is terrorism and economics. The terrorism reasons are easily understood. No country has an open arm policy towards felons and terrorists. What is not so easily understood is the economical reasons, which are muddied beyond comprehension by politicians, big business, and the media.
Obviously, it is not in the tax payer's best interest to pay for the services (Social Security, School, Health Care) that undocumented workers use, while big business reaps the benefits. One can argue that it is a disservice to the American citizen and the illegal immigrant.
There is nothing humane or American about receiving substandard wages without health benefits yet this is the compensation that illegal immigrants receive. Although we might save a nickel here and there on goods and services, we ultimately pay the price: high unemployment rate, diminishing quality of life, and stagnating wages.
The argument that illegal aliens take the jobs that you and I don't want is a half truth. The reality is that illegal aliens take jobs that you and I won't do for such little compensation. Economics dictates that a high unemployment rate creates greater competition for jobs, which in turn causes a wage decrease. Suddenly it makes sense that our wages are not increasing.
The high unemployment rate and stagnating wages are not due to just illegal immigration. Outsourcing is more dangerous to the average American than illegal immigration will ever be. Businesses are reaping the benefits of cheap labor on an unprecedented scale: no health benefits, low wages, long hours, little or no taxes, etc..
We are told that this is the reality of the global economy and that we are all suffering. Surely no one has suffered more than Exxon's Lee Raymond, who received a paltry 400 million for his retirement. CEOs are making more money now then ever before. Profits are high, working wages are low. We are told that our economy is strong, yet we aren't feeling it. Why?
There are few jobs and we are all competing for them. Whoever can do it for less will win out. Don't worry, Bush has the American people's back. I'm expecting a turnaround any day now. Instead of curbing outsourcing and illegal immigration, the CEO president (the Decider) handed the keys of the country over to big business. Trickle Down Economics will prevail, because he feels it will. Dick Cheney made 10 million last year. It is just a mater of time before he spends that cash and you reap the benefits. It will trickle down. I can feel it. Praise Jesus!
It doesn't have to be this way. There was a time when some companies would fly you in for job interviews and put you up in a hotel for the night. You would receive a rejection letter if you didn't get the job. This was also a time when the American people were infatuated with presidential blowjobs and the stock market was exploding like never before. Wages were increasing. The unemployment rate was low. We were doing better. We were optimistic about the future. I close my eyes now and all I see is black.
I know we can do better, but not with this president. This administration and Congress does not work for us. They work for big business. They will lie, cheat, and plunder us into irrelevance. Communist China has a controlling interest in our future. They own our debt. It is only a matter of time before we slip to number two in the world.
If we want to escape this dilemma we need to end our dependence on oil. We will need to stop outsourcing. We will need to protect our borders. We need to rebuild our manufacturing and engineering sectors. It is time to make America work for us, the average American. It is time to strip big business of it's political power. As John Lennon stated, "Power to the people, power to you and me."
