I just can't wrap my head around why a Spanish language version of The National Anthem is supposed to be the second coming. Which is kinda funny, considering the wingnuts are supposedly eagerly anticipating the end of times (didn't want to exclude anyone by limiting it to the Rapture). I guess I can see how someone might be slightly upset, thinking it's a song too sacred for interpretation. Yet that doesn't explain the countless interpretations occurring daily at sporting events. There was no outrage when Marvin Gaye re-interpreted The National Anthem. I hesitate to use such a strong word as racism; rather I'll just say that there seems to be a definite xenophobia attached to this. Again, would there be outrage if Tim McGraw did a radical interpretation? My guess is it would be applauded as inspiration, showcasing what's so great about this country.
Along this point, why is there such sacredness surrounding the American flag with these same group of people? They are supposedly very religious. And if my memory and schooling are correct, God got very upset at Moses and the Israelites for worshipping false idols. In fact, it's one of their blessed Ten Commandments which they would like to replace The Constitution. I have a hard understanding how their tenacity in creating an anti-flag burning amendment. It's not like there is a widespread problem with flag burning in this country. Guess it's a way to rally the troops without really doing anything.

ReplyDeleteI'm not outraged, i just think it's bad timing.

Then again, timing is everything. If the civil rights movement was put off due to timing, then African Americans would still be unable to vote, and segregation would still rule the south. The time to stand up for a cause should always be now. The Republicans sure don't let the country's climate dictate their agenda. They just keep steam rolling their way to screwing us over.
ReplyDeleteWith regard to the Spanish Interpertation of the National Anthem, I think it is natural for people to fear what they don't understand. Fear becomes dangerous when it causes irrational behavior. The politics of fear are a dangerous thing: Iraq War, possible Iran War, anti-UN, etc...
I think it takes living in Texas to understand the backlash to things like this.
ReplyDeleteWhen you have the Alamo sitting right there, and on some days you can't help but feel surrounded....
It may be close minded but it's the truth.
Sometimes I get the urge to scream THIS IS AMERICA DAMNIT, and NO! WE HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN SANTA ANA. IT STILL STINGS.
I guess it would be like a New Yorker having to be okay with and Arabic or Farci version right now.
Perhaps I should shut up. I am on a tangent. Please anyone, offer comments on where I am hateful and wrong. :-(
