The Hammer - He Gone

Future Surreal Life Roommate?

Definitely not a sad day. Or at least not as sad as when MC Hammer had to file for bankruptcy and they shut down his mansion. But it's a good day for the American people. I'm not here to take comfort in the sadness of others. However, I don't believe it's wrong to feel some vindication, to feel that the system we have set up ultimately works.

To start, I believe most if not all politicians blend the line between technically being corrupt. It's basically impossible not to. It's there job to meet with lobbyists and corporations and hear their concerns and write legislation based on it. Where's the line between doing what your constituents want and doing based on money you received? Under Delay's watch, however, the system was manipulated to err almost exclusively on the interests of money.

As an aside, I do believe the Republicans in charge deserve a lot of the blame for this. But let it be known that this is not a Republican/Democrat phenomena - Democrats have just as long of a history of corruption. The difference is the degree the Republicans took it and how blatantly they flaunted their law-breaking. They changed the face of the lobbying industry and made K Street concerns the only concerns they listened to. They allowed lobbyists to write bills (awful bankruptcy bill which someone has a loophole for multi-millionaires but not for medical hardships). Then, they strong-armed congressmen until they got just enough votes. They didn't rule at the fringes of the majority. They openly ruled based on a substantial minority - money was used as a way to get the votes needed along with other rule stretching techniques (holding votes open way longer than ever, etc).

So allow me to take some satisfaction, if only for the small step forward for the power of the people. I'm definitely not satisfied by this one decision, but it gives me hope that we can take back control of government. As Ice Cube once said, "I didn't even have to use my AK, I gotta say it was a good day."
