Book Review: Running with Scissors

You'll either love it or hate it. There is no middle ground with this book. Personally, I though it was one of the funniest horrifying grossest books I ever read. Augusten doesn't aim to be likeable in this memoir covering his early years just pointedly honest sometimes to the point of sounding like a dick. What else can you expect from a boy whose crazy mother gave him away to her even crazier sex obsessed therapist? The weirdness doesn't stop there; thirteen year old Augusten gets his groove on with the therapists 35 year old son who lives in a shack. Also there are all those pills he popping along with the Christmas tree, which stays up year round while the baby craps wherever he pleases (Because diapers restrict freedom.). Are some of the stories embellished? If you get past the second chapter, you don't even care anymore. You're just wondering how you managed to survive such a dull existence.

You can buy the book off Amazon for really cheap. Look at the link on the bottom right of this blog.

Just finished this book myself...and if it is true that you either have to like it or hate it...then I'm not sure which one I am yet...actually I do like it...just not love it.

Some of the horrific stuff between Neil and Augusten was very heavy...and Dr. Finch's character is incredibly perplexing.

Did you know they were making a movie about this film? I blogged about the book and movie today.

Thanks RC. I will have to check it out. I always thought that they should make it into a film.
