Chuck E. Cheese and the Animatronics

Most people overlooked the great Chuck E. Cheese strike of 1993. Perhaps we were too consumed with Nirvana or Pearl Jam to care much about these great entertainers. I remember seeing a five sentence paragraph buried deep in the Arts and Entertainment section of the Detroit News. The date was April 1, 1993.
The animatronic characters which amused millions for bogus tokens decided that they had enough. No longer were they going to sing crappy tunes for whiny kids stuffing their fat little cheeks with greasy pizza only to stop mid-song for another token. It was a pointless endeavor. It was reported that greyhound busses came to take the animatronics away to an undisclosed location. Sometimes, I like to think that Cheney visits them there.

I went to Chuck E Cheese for a friend's birthday party a few years ago. Besides them not having beer, the most frustrating aspect was the lack of animatronics. Maybe we just got fed up and headed to a bar before they came on. Or maybe I've removed that memory. Either way, it was not as cool as when I was a kid.
For some stupid reason, they decided to get rid of the animatronics. I guess they figured nobody was interested in them anymore. Personally I think it was the best thing about the place. The pizza certainly sucked!
every few years they decide they are showbiz
