After putting the most incompetent president ever onto the ticket in 2000 and having 8 years of rule, I sought to punish the Republicans. I could not in good conscience vote for any Republican for the next few years. Now, with Mrs Incompetent as their VP nominee, I can never vote for a Republican again. They have such contempt for the American people that I must make this decision. It actually kinda sucks, because the Democrats in general are not much better. It would be hard for me to name my favorite band of all time but if so, The Clash would one of the contenders. I'm also big for influence on popular music and there is no denying the huge influence The Clash have had on popular music. "London Calling" and "The Clash" are two of the greatest CDs ever made. "Give 'Em Enough Rope" is really underrated. And "Sandinista!" is a beautiful mess that would be a classic if they had made it only a 2 LP instead of 3. Anyway, I think I'm starting another of my nonstop Clash listening periods.

Political observers have been aghast at the latest poll showing Obama trailing McCain among self-identified racists, 78-22. "In 2004, Bush only won by 30 points. There is possible path to The White House if the Democrat does not cut this down to 40 points", an unnamed news-douchebag was heard muttering into the microphone he makes love to every night.

Upon hearing the news, a tubby fatass drug abuser who happens to attract a loyal bevy of stupid proclaimed, "The driveby media won't tell you the real news that racists like Farrakhan and Jessee Jackson and Steve Urkel support Barack Obama. That's right America, that racist scum Urkel supports Obama."

The Obama campaign has denied our request for a comment, as has the McCain campaign. However, we can make assumptions about what the McCain campaign would say and it goes a little something like this - "Whoo-hooo!!!! Our racist ads are working! That BOY will know his place or my name aint'...oh yeah, POW bitches!"

Been reading "Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk" by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain and so far I must say it's been pretty great. I always find rock histories and biographies fascinating. And so far this book has been thoroughly enjoyable. At about the halfway point, it is just getting into the rise of CBGBs and Television and The Ramones.

It's interesting to understand how everything came together. From The Velvet Underground and Andy Warhol through The MC5 and The Stooges to The New York Dolls and the glam scene, each movement inspired and set the stage for the next. I am having a hard time putting it down and should have it finished by the end of the week. So far, Iggy is the man. I saw him in Detroit many years ago and it was an incredible show. But it appears to have been nothing compared to The Stooges shows. Iggy was dangerous. And I know I constantly profess my love for Iggy. But I can not stress enough just how influential Iggy was on popular music. It's a travesty that The Stooges are not in The Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. He was not always the weird old man who refuses to wear shirts. And this book reaffirms his place in rock n' roll history

Do They Have Any Shame?

Of course the answer is NO. Republicans have no shame, which serves them well when trying to win elections. Especially with a media that considers their job to be stenography, in the best possible light. So even after McCain's house gaffe, they are still running with the Obama as an elitist. Even though Obama came from humble beginnings and rose to presidential nominee. It's a great American story. But the guy who married into wealth and does not know how many houses he owns and spends over $200,000 a year on servants is the regular salt of the earth guy. If you believe your job is just to repeat the lines of each side, then yeah, I guess that's what the Republicans say. Of course it takes 5 minutes of research to find that story unbelievably false. But that's not in their job responsibility. Neither is actually informing the electorate.

BTW, I own a single condo but I do shop at Whole Foods. So I guess I am afterall a damn dirty hippie elitist. But the guy who takes a 9 car motorcade to get a cappuccino at Starbucks is not. Go figure!

It's almost impossible to believe this is true. On This Week, The Dealer asserted that McCain's housing gaffe would come back to haunt...wait for it, Obama. That's right, everything is good news for McCain even when it reflects negatively on him. It would be challenging to find greater proof that our media is not liberal. Unfortunately, The Dealer sets the conventional wisdom in DC. And nothing will cause him to deviate from his script that everything is good news for McCain.

This is just further evidence of what we are dealing with. It's not just the Republicans, it's a good majority of Democrats. It's the media. It's the corporations. Their goal is to keep and expand their power. Which unfortunately comes at our expense. So as long as they can muddy the waters and play these fuckin' stupid personality based elections, they can prevent us from getting what we deserve. It's about time we get mad as hell and fight for what we want. Because they are not going to give up without a fight. Electing Obama is just a start. Holding him and the Democratic Congress accountable to our desires is just the next step. Somewhere we need to fix our broken media. That's so important but also very challenging. Until the dynamic changes, we will really struggle.

Mr Optimism

By nature I am a pessimist. Which is why I am a little shocked in my recent optimism. I know there is a long road ahead, but I see things coming into place that will make it possible. A President Obama would just be the start. For this is much bigger then him and will revolutionize the world as we know it.

It is hard for me to clearly describe what I'm seeing. But I'll try. To begin, we have to go back to see what has failed us. And that can generally be summarized as politics. We have been getting screwed for too many years and it's just a matter of time until the pendulum begins to swing the other way. In this high stakes games, there are many enemies. I hold the media as main culprit, but it's very complicated and could take multiple books to scratch the surface. And while Democrats are not as bad as Republicans, they are pretty frickin' bad. So it is less about Obama the politician or Obama as Liberal Jesus. He just represents and is actively progressing the people powered movement which will change the world. Or that is my hope, which is why I am so enthusiastically behind him.

People powered movement is the word I will use until I can think of a better word. It refers to citizens taking responsibility for making the world a better place. For taking control in areas we are being failed and changing the landscape. In many ways, this is not a novel concept. This country is built off the American Dream and its entrepeneurial spirit. It is the convergence with technological advancements that is accelerating this into a movement that is rapidly changing. For technology has made the barriers to entry less expensive. So cheap, in fact, that there are almost no barriers. Doesn't mean there isn't a lot of blood and sweat needed. For that's exactly the case. It just doesn't necessarily cost millions of dollars.

Back when the media may have been rightfully described as liberal, conservatives built huge media infrastructures to combat this perceived bias. It required huge investments, which is why the conservative movement is so beholden to the wealthy. They started it and the whole point is to ensure it will remain. But that's why this new movement is so exciting. It's about all citizens, rich and poor.

As I sort out my observations and start to make sense of it, I'm sure you'll see posts. One example I want to point out is Strange Bedfellows. From their site:

If we had a working media that held our elected leaders accountable. Or if we had elected officials who respected The Constitution. In either case, this group would not be necessary. Their message would be heard loud and clear. But it's not being represented. So they took it upon themselves to get the message to the people. They will create the PR campaigns, utilizing different tactics and their personal expertise, to achieve their goals. It will revolutionize the world. It is what inspires me, in such a large world, to hold onto my ideals and live what I like to call, the punk rock lifestyle.

Instead of Saving My Soul, How About Helping The Poor?

My friend is in the midst of a fabulous conversation with his childhood church. Apparently you can never leave that church. They will hound you until you give up. And that includes the pastor and the group of elders (I wish I were making that up). But I did want to latch onto one thing - the need to pray/save for your soul.

Raised Catholic, I get the supposed benefit to saving my soul. But that just illustrates the utter lunacy of the God you might recall from such Bibles as the Catholic Churches. He is a selfish and little man. I'm sorry, but that's not my God. And yeah, it's true - my God can kick your God's ass.

I'll get back on point here. While I have my doubts about the existence of God, I do believe in something. It's up to you to call it God or a higher being or whatever floats your boat. I do not believe God is watching over us, controlling every little thing. Sorry, he is not a control freak. If so, there would be no evolution. He could not be that patient.

So this idea that God is so needy he needs us all to follow his rules is ridiculous. My God favors living a good life over following rules and attending rituals. Your church batting average may be better than mine, but God judges us on multiple levels. Afterall, he would not be so idiotic and simple-minded.

Which leads me back to this desire to save everyone's souls. Imagine what could be accomplished if this religious fanatics used that energy on making people's lives better. I'll leave it up to them to decide what that means. But I think the world would be a markedly better place. And somewhere, the Baby Jesus would shed a tear of happiness.

McCain Vows to Bring Back Touched By An Angel

While campaigning today in Deerfield Beach, FL, Republican presidential nominee John McCain told a group of supporters that if elected President, he would bring back the TV show Touched By An Angel. During the question and answer session in front of a group of older Americans (though strangely skewing younger than McCain), one woman asked McCain directly what he would do to make their lives better. After some uncomfortable silence followed by utterances that approximated English, McCain finally found his footing.

"My friends", McCain began. "I promise that as President, I will bring back the cast of Touched By An Angel under an Executive Order. During these uncertain times, we need all the help we can get. And nothing helped me through the tumultuous 90s better than the hip feel-good show I liked to call Touched By An Angel."

Before McCain could continue, the deafening silence overwhelmed him. Showing his true maverickness, McCain quickly pivoted to focus on Obama's plan to force Angela Landsbury to pose nude in an issue of Playboy. "My friends, Obama wants to shame America's way of life by having Angela Landsbury be the centerfold in an issue of Playboy. Some call it retribution for the harmless pranks that occurred at the country club Abu Ghraib. I promise that as President, Angela Landsbury will remain the chaste and virgin role model our daughters can aspire to become."

Within minutes of McCain's speech, hundreds of right wing blogs posted stories trumpeting Obama's plan for Landsbury to pose in Playboy. In addition, Rush Limbaugh plans to spend approximately half of his show on the topic tomorrow, assuming he tires of the discussion around things that woman might have done with her mouth to John Edwards' body. I suggest every thinking being avoid Limbaugh's show tomorrow.

Dallas Lundman Cuts His Vacation Short

Doylestown, PA resident Dallas Lundman had to cut his family vacation to Myrtle Beach short. According to eyewitnesses, Dallas Lundman answered his cell phone shortly after 10:37am while sunbathing next to his wife and 2 kids. Things escalated rather quickly, with Dallas standing up and then forcibly waving his arms. Eventually he exited the beach to continue his phone call in a Hooters parking lot.

Dallas returned to the beach and his family, visibly distraught, at 11:19am. At this point, he began to pack up his family's belongings. Marianne Lundman proceeded to tug on the blanket as Dallas was attempting to place it in "that huge ass bag that god damn family always brings", as travel companions the Flemings refer to it. Before too soon, there was yelling and screaming, and a little bit of sand kicking. Authorities were not called to the scene, though Mikey and Wendy needed consoling.

When asked for comment, Dallas denied the sand kicking. But he explained that his family's vacation had to be cut short because of "some jerkoff in Marketing who can't follow directions. I go on my first frickin' vacation in 10 years and that guy can't fill out a work order with the proper instructions. Dammit, I don't make nearly enough to put up with this bullshit. Thank God for them the economy is the shitter and that I'm too lazy to update my resume."

When informed that George Bush did not leave his vacation to deal with the crisis between Russia and Georgia, a clearly frustrated and outraged Dallas Lundman bellowed, "F$ckin' douchebag!"

Our eyewitness could not actually vouch for Dallas' return to work, as he continued to ogle bikini clad teens at the beach.

"McCain is a president who will protect McDonaldland from terrorists who wish to disrupt our way of life and take away our freedom fries. I believe he will support my innovative "No Cheeseburger Left Behind" tax cut program, which ensures that all Americans can purchase tasty McDonald's food products."

America's Tastiest Mayor Supports Republican Presidential Hopeful, John McCain

"John McCain has ensured me that if elected, he will put an end to the frivolous 1973 Sid and Marty Krofft lawsuit, which threatens our very existence. Make no mistake. John is the man for the job."

The mayor's announcement was greeted with enthusiastic applause despite the mayor's mounting national unpopularity.

People will think of anything not to support Obama, but sometimes it seems just ridiculous.

I received an email a couple of weeks a go about how Obama removed the American flag from his airplane.

Sounds bad, right?

Sure. Until you look at the facts.

Obama was using a North American Airline plane, which tradmarked the American flag image as it's company's logo. In other words, he probably could not modify the plane without removing the trademarked image first.

McCain's plane, "Straight Talk Express" does not appear to have an American flag on it anywhere.

Flag be missing! Ya'll!

To be fair in recent years presidential candidates have been painting their planes with their campaign slogans and colors.

Obama's plane is no different in that regard to Bush's 2004 plane, Kerry's 2004 plane, or McCain's 2008 plane.

Obama does have 2 flags on the side of his plane, but since it is not on the tail so it doesn't count.

Sigh.

I suppose you can't expect much from a guy who drinks the blood of aborted babies for breakfast.

Catholic Church Goes Old School

Tom's post on church got me thinking about religion. Just like him, I'm a card carrying member of the bad Catholic society.

I go to church when either the parental units talk me into it, holiday, or funeral. Otherwise I don't go. A couple of years a go I experimented with the Episcopal Church.

I have to admit I enjoyed it. The problem was that I didn't want to convert. I know conversion is just a word, but the implications bothered me. Would lightening strike me if I turned my back on my religion? What would my parents think? Could you ever escape Catholic guilt?

The Episcopal Church in my opinion is a more relevant, progressive version of the Catholic Church. It even follows the same format except that things are in a different order, priests can marry, women can become priests, and there is this odd acceptance of gays.

I remember thinking, "You mean these dudes who are into dudes are not going to hell?" Strange. This goes against everything that those celibate white haired men told me.

All joking aside, I enjoyed hearing a priest candidly talk about marriage and family matters when he was both a father and husband. He even sounded like he knew what he was talking about.

I know many fine Catholic priests, but I think it would be a challenge for them to pull off a good sermon on love and marriage. Sure, they might have studied in-depth about marriage. They might know many married couples. But I doubt they know what goes into a marriage on a day-to-day basis. That's a big disconnect.

Then there is topic of sex, which the Catholic Church views as being both shameful and sinful. Sex is natural and by nature we are sexual beings. Why is something to be feared and despised? Are we not despising ourselves?

Suppressing a natural urge in order to preach on religious matters appears illogical. The two are not necessarily connected. I can buy the argument that celibacy is the ultimate sacrifice offered up to God, but it appears to create many issues.

Besides celibacy conflicts with early church history. Most of the apostles were married and I'm pretty sure that most of them had children too. If they gave up sex after becoming followers wouldn't that make them horrible husbands?

At some point in time in church history, marriage and sex became a huge negative. The justification that a priest/nun is married to the church and marriage would strain the relationship with God or distract him/her from their religious obligations seems flimsy.

There are plenty of "unholy" distractions in the world. A marriage could be a distraction, but so could alcohol, television, sports, food, video games, etc...

I refuse to believe that there is a priest alive who doesn't partake in some or all of those activities. It doesn't make them a bad priest; Just a person who isn't focused solely on God 100% 24/7.

Priests are a lot like people. Some like a good drink; Others like to play basketball, and some like to cook. There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of those activities.

The Catholic Church currently is on the fast track backwards. Nostalgia can be a popular retreat, but it does not solve the church's current problems such as the priest shortage, the relevancy of the faith, and so forth. Pope Benedict should try to address these issues or he risks alienating a generation.

John SIDNEY McCain, the probable presidential runner-up, has a woman’s middle name. At the very least, the concealment of his middle name, SIDNEY, raises serious questions about his true gender and whether he is a SECRET woman. He has admitted that economics is not an issue he understands well. A certain gender is well known to be less inclined towards math and numbers. If elected, it’s very likely McCain will institute mandatory lingerie pillow AND tickle fights.

John SIDNEY McCain was raised by parents of Scots-Irish and English ancestry. At their most harmless, the Irish are notorious drunks who enjoy fighting while stashing large piles of gold underneath rainbows. In the extreme, the Irish are violent TERRORISTS attempting to overthrow the government. While no evidence exists explicitly linking McCain to a TERROR organization, he has never denied membership in the IRA. It is also unclear whether he or any of his drunken relatives ever knew anyone who might know someone who once interacted with or passed in the street a member of the IRA. Given the challenges facing our country, we need confirmation that McCain is not affiliated nor knows people affiliated with TERROR organizations.

Born in 1936, John SIDNEY McCain moved around a lot throughout his early years, which coincided with World War II. The exact details of McCain’s behavior during this time are sketchy at best. It is interesting to note there is no record of McCain denouncing the actions of the Nazis while they were committing genocides. He was noticeably silent. He may not have been a NAZI SYNTHESIZER, but this raises doubts about which side he was rooting for during World War II. This also raises questions about his potential loyalties as president, given our current wars and the wars he promises to start.

John SIDNEY McCain served as a naval pilot during the Vietnam War. While executing a mission in 1967, McCain was captured in Hanoi, where he stayed in the Hanoi Hilton for 5 long years. McCain’s fellow soldiers battled valiantly against the evils of Communism while McCain was lounging in a hotel, most likely alternating between the pool and the hot tub to enhance the experience of both. If McCain had fought alongside his comrades, we may have never needed Rocky to defeat Communism.

After Vietnam, McCain returned to the US to discover his first wife with horrific injuries from an auto accident. He promptly began an affair with a woman 18 years his junior, eventually divorcing his disfigured wife in 1980. As President, McCain will be faced with a similar situation, given the current wreck that is our country. He will be tempted to fool around with other countries. It will just be a matter of time until he divorces the US for a newer, younger, and more attractive country that offers him more than we can.

During this presidential election, we must be vigilant to prevent a John SIDNEY McCain presidency.

Can we really risk having a drunk, fighting Irishman who may or may not have ties to TERRORIST organizations? When trouble times arrive, will McCain fight for us or will he vacation or fall into the arms of another country? Do we really want to trust this country to someone who may secretly be a woman or a NAZI SYNTHESIZER?

I may not be the brightest person in the world but there is something I just don't get. It is the anger and outrage that comes from the right when discussing the environment. It's true that ties to the established energy companies explains the politician's motives. And I guess those who listen/brainwash by Limbaugh and the right wing propaganda machine are just regurgitating what they are told. But it's still striking to me how normal people get so angry, actually thinking people are actively trying to take away their vehicles. The paranoia is disturbing and scary and so tiring to fight against. As an aside, it's actually the strategy behind almost everything with the right. Since they could not compete on the merits of their arguments, they force us liberals to argue something so pointless. Instead of deciding how to have a forward looking energy policy, we argue over whether global warming exists and whether the government is going to take away their cars. It's tiring and thankless work.

I may live in a big city but given where I live and where I work, I have limited public transportation options. In theory I could take public transportation. However, it would basically double my commute. But if I had the option, I would prefer not to drive. If Chicago wants to improve the public transportation system, I will give all my support. And you would expect the car stealing conspiracy theorists would feel the same way. Unless of course their idea of fun car activities is sitting in heavily congested traffic. With better public transportation comes more options. You would then expect less people to drive, resulting in less cars on the road. Then those car lovers will have a more enjoyable commute and can spend less time stalled on expressways.

But the right wing propaganda machine has made everything a confrontation with the liberals. So instead of supporting policies that would make their lives more enjoyable, they reflexively fight. If those latte sipping wussies on the left are in favor, I am opposed. Take that you nancy boy bitches!

And that doesn't even get into job creations that would occur with basically the start or huge expansion of new industries. Or spending that would go into infrastructure. But damn you if you ever want to raise my taxes. I will keep fighting for lower taxes until I actually pay negative taxes and the government pays me to breath. It's a weird dynamic. Whenever I get into a discussion about taxes, my response is that I want more from my taxes. If that means raising taxes, then so be it. If it means eliminating waste (whatever that means), so be it. If it means cutting our defense spending, then hell yeah! But instead of having these discussions, we argue over whether the government wants to take away your car and prevent you from driving. Sometimes all I can say is - Save me Jeebus!

It's quite sad to hear that Bernie Mac passed away at the age of 50. From my standpoint, this was a very big loss. Maybe I wasn't the biggest Bernie Mac fan, but I really like him. He was one funny funny dude. I highly recommend "The Original Kings of Comedy", which is hilarious. And Bernie Mac was definitely the star of the show. I also thought his show was very underappreciated. Back in the day when I did not have cable, The Bernie Mac Show was a staple of my daily TV viewing. It was a very good family show. Never understood why it wasn't more popular.

So today I say thanks to Bernie Mac for everything he accomplished in his 50 years. He will be remembered.

As someone who supported Edwards in the early stages of this presidential election cycle, I am very disappointed by the news of his affair. I keep coming up with one word to describe him - despicable. To do that to his wife is just awful. I did not think it was possible but I like Elizabeth Edwards even more now. At the end of the day, I really do not care about the sex lives of consenting adults. Marriage (to my unmarried understanding) is very complicated and personal. But that doesn't mean I can not find it despicable to cheat on your wife when she has cancer.

The other thing that angers me is the ego and selfishness he showed by running for president. Did he really think this would never come up? What a gift it would have been for the Republicans if he had received the nomination. I appreciate how complicated life can be. But if you are Edwards and you cheated on your wife, you owe it to your party to accept your inability to receive the nomination. It might be unfair but it's the world we live in.

All that being said, this story does not deserve that much coverage. He is not the Democratic nominee. He does not work for the Obama campaign. He is not even currently an elected official. But our media will probably focus heavily on this story, which they always do when it's a Democrat. There has been no comparable coverage surrounding any of the Republican administration's lies. Just as there has been little coverage surrounding McCain or Giuliani or any of the Republican candidate's infidelities. There is just a separate set of rules for Republicans. Until we can change the media, we will struggle to move forward as a country.

Just Asking...

Why even bother with the charade of a civil society and try these suspects in a military tribunal if they will just be locked up as enemy combatants once their imprisonment is over? According to our rule of laws, people get released from jail once their sentence is over.

Adding that it's such a shame to see the utter lack of outrage from the raping of our Constitution over these last 8 years. I blame every one of those f$ckers who committed the atrocities but also add that WE are not without blame. We are not unlike the bystanders who witness the crime and do nothing, either out of fear or indifference. Too many of us believe that this will never affect us...until it does and then we are screwed.

Times like this remind me of the song "Waiting Room" by Fugazi with the following lyrics. If we all took this to heart our country and world would be much better off.

My First Time

Today I went to buy new running shoes as I believe my shoes are wearing out. Might not be the case as I was told I should get 400-500 miles out of them. I'm guessing 250 miles would be generous, but they feel like I need new shoes. Anyway, it got me to thinking about the first time I bought shoes at Fleet Feet. Even though I ran cross country and track in high school, I never knew shoes should be fit based on the person. My knees naturally go either inside or outside, I forget. But ever since I got "diagnosed" and wear appropriate fitting shoes, I have had no major issues. Whereas in the past I had shin splits frequency, now my only pain is a signal that I need new shoes. It might seem like a minor thing but it has a major effect on my life, in its own weird way.

I've always had a novel idea about combining a bunch of short stories that were seemingly disjointed and out of order. I have expanded this many times with different ideas. But the one constant has been incorporating the big events in the protagonists life with the seemingly inconsequential ( not surprisingly many iterations involve his life flashing before his eyes). A new idea would be to restrict all short stories to the first something. Though I may just be making it needlessly complicated with too many rules. But I digress. But if I was doing my life, the first time I went to Fleet Feet would be in my story...though I'd need to add some villains and a love interest and maybe a cartoon sidekick (I think MC Skat Cat would be available).

Especially considering the media's infatuation with the hypocrisy of Gore (why doesn't he bike everywhere?) and Edwards (my god, how dare he talk about combatting poverty when he has a big house). But it's not gonna happen. There is some reporting of his probable violation of donor limits through stealth donors. But that will probably fade and cause less of a stir than the no evidence Rezko story generated. Ahhh, sometimes it's comforting to know we have a functioning AND liberal media.

Quick Observation

Back in 2004 when I was canvassing in Wisconsin for Kerry, I ran across some guy who owned a burrito stand. He exited his house smoking a cigarette and looking either hungover, high, or drunk. As my friend and I discussed the upcoming presidential election, he had a surprising amount of passion. In fact, he was energized around stem cell research. To paraphrase him: I'm gonna need them to give me a new lung and liver some day. The surprising thing was what happened next. He mentioned maybe supporting Bush because at the most recent debate Bush indicated he would use stem cell research. Even though we explained this meant the very limited cells that existed in a very defined capacity, he was already convinced. There was no difference between Bush and Kerry on stem cells so he was going to move onto the issues that affected his small business.

I bring up this to illustrate a point. With the constant flip flopping of McCain, it really does appear to be a standard strategy of the Republicans. Obscure the real views since they are unpopular so everything comes down to the tax and spend liberal vs the selfless tax cutter. As long as the media does not (1) call out the Republican or (2) explain where those tax cuts and increases are directed, the strategy works wonderfully. It just perpetuates the myth of the financially responsible tax cutting Republican eliminating government waste vs the damn tax raising liberal trying to give handouts to his government cronies. If the consequences of this myth had not been so tragic over these many years, you could almost come to admire it.

Tin Foil Hats

Generally speaking, I am against crackpot conspiracy stories that enter tin foil hat realms. There is a reason they make for compelling movies and TV, yet still bear little resemblence to reality. That being said, there is something going on with this Anthrax story that needs further explanation. I still believe that incompetence and an inability to accept responsibility explain the majority of what occurred. However, the more we find out the more it leads towards crazy conspiracy theory land. I highly recommend reading Glenn's latest post if you need to get up to speed.

When in isolation, there are numerous explanations that make this situation acceptable. When added to all the other stories surrounding the lies that lead to war with Iraq and the ongoing rumors of a staged attack to go to war against Iran, it becomes more compelling to ask whether there is something to this. Is it possible that something sinister happened here? Something so awful as to make our government crumble if the public ever found out? And does this, along with the eavesdropping and torture and everything else, all come together if only someone could gather all the pieces. I doubt it, for this is not a movie. And I surely hope not. For given the incompetence of this administration, the media will have been extremely negligent if they don't put the pieces together. Still, there are many questions that deserve answers. And as citizens, we should be demanding these answers. But better to placate us with the idiocracy on our TV.

Lollapalooza vs Pitchfork

Saw Radiohead Friday night at Lollapalooza and they were incredible, as always. However, I think something like Lollapalooza is just too damn big for me nowadays. I had to leave the people I was with to go to the bathroom and knew there was no way I could find my way back to them. Without a competing headliner, the masses all were watching Radiohead. Still good, but also disappointing from what I was expecting. It's just hard to get that connection with the band and their music when you are just one of so many thousands. For all purposes, you are just listening over the loudspeaker.

This was my first time attending Lollapalooza since it has been in Chicago. Overall, I prefer a festival like Pitchfork to this. Just too big. Too commercial. Too corporate. There also seemed to be rather poor planning, which was shocking to me. The bathrooms and port-a-johns were sparse and located far away from stages. The trash was everywhere and was difficult to actually recycle as the receptacles filled up quickly without replenishment. Not sure if there were more people then normal or what.

Not to mention, the vibe seemed more friendly at Pitchfork. It was much more communal. Again, this is probably due to the size. Still, can't help but feel disappointed from this experience. While I will be back at Pitchfork next year regardless of the acts, I think I will stay away from Lollapalooza.

Still can't stop listening to The Hold Steady's latest "Stay Positive". Highly highly recommended here. They have gone from America's best bar band to possibly America's best band. In a perfect world they would become huge. In reality, this will probably be the album that puts them into Wilco territory - able to do their own thing and make a living off it but not quite mainstream popular. Who knows, maybe they'll even headline a night at Lollapalooza in a few years.

Every time I give the American people credit for their intelligence I am usually let down. Case in point, the ludicrous new movie "Swing Vote". The premise here is that the presidential election is tied in one state and left up to one man who had this vote not counted. While I do not necessarily expect everyone to have great knowledge of our electoral system, I would hope they would have a basic understanding. And that basic understanding would make this premise laughable.

So what I do see this morning watching some crappy movie review show ("Lyons and Bailes")? Well, both critics indicate this as a plausible scenario. In fact, one said she was so confused by the 2000 election that she just doesn't get the system. Seriously, this is what gets shown on the TV. And since this movie will probably make bushelfulls of money, I'm guessing the American public will not notice. It's actually a shame that our country has become so idiotic. I am not a particularly smart person, but every day I feel more and more intelligence. And this occurs while I constantly kill brain cells with my too heavy drinking. As months go by, the movie "Idiocracy" appears more and more possible.

Have been contemplating whether to attend Lollapalooza this year. It's very expensive ($80 a day) and there are only a handful of bands I want to see. But after last night I think I may have convinced myself to go Friday and Saturday. The biggest selling point is Radiohead. While I have seen them numerous times they are an incredible live act and actually can take advantage of huge crowds. With the exceptional "In Rainbows" to support, I'm thinking it's worth the money. After all, Public Enemy would have been worth $80.

Hail to the Victors

I'll admit to buying into the Rich Rodriguez Experience. From all indications, Lloyd Carr was running a country club these last few years. That might be the explanation for his extremely talented teams never reaching their potential. Year in and year out they have been one of the most disappointed teams in the country. If Rodriguez can install any sense of accountability and toughen up the team, they should be able to reach their potential. Unless Michigan really suffers through hard times, recruiting will never be an issue. It will be extremely fun and interesting to see what Rodriguez can do with the type of 4 and 5 star athletes he could not get at West Virginia.

That being said, I am a little puzzled by the doom and gloom from most prognosticators. This especially coming after the extreme optimism for Notre Dame, with most experts thinking 8+ wins is realistic after a 3 win season. Just seems odd for most experts to think Michigan will win maybe 6 games. After all, this is a program that has not had a losing season in nearly 40 years. And if Carr were still coach, I would guess some experts would label them a darkhorse. The talent is there - it's just unproven. And this is still the Big Ten, which better than last year is still down. If they only finish .500 in the conference and 3-1 in the preseason, they end up 7-5. Based on that, I would argue that 6-6 is the worst case scenario with 8-4 a great year. While not contending for a national or even Big Ten title, it's not the end of Michigan football as we know it. Then again, ESPN is not about actual insights anymore - it's about making controversy and big bold statements. Hence, the return to prominence of Notre Dame football and the demise of the Michigan program.

The Cubs Collapse

Are we witnessing another monumental Cubs collapse? And if so, who will be this year's Bartman or goat or black cat or Leon Durham?

Actually, it is just baseball. The season is long. Every one goes through injuries. While there are legitimate reasons for concerns (why Howry sucks so bad), each team usually winds up where they belong. That being said, the Cubs should still have no problem making the playoffs. At some point they will start hitting again. And with Big Z, Harden, Dempster, and Lilly, they will win a bunch of games. Anytime Lou wants to replace Marquis in the rotation with Marshall will be fine with me. It might be unfair but feel free to use him as the scapegoat. He is a pretty crappy pitcher who is doing his usual second half sucking.

Pretty great clip of Les Savy Fav at the Pitchfork Music Festival. As the crowd's get bigger, it's harder for Tim to be as crazy. So there was no Slip n' Slide this year. But he still spent many moments in the crowd. And his onstage banter was fantastic. I especially enjoyed his imploring of the church to come closer for a listen. But the highlight had to be "We'll Make a Lover Of You". Classic live Les Savy Fav - band incredible tight while Tim acts crazy (and yes, missing notes and lyrics as singing becomes a secondary concern). ENJOY!

Public Enemy

I am planning on a post about the entire Pitchfork Music Festival. But that might have to wait for the weekend. The headline - it kicked ass and was an absolute blast! But the biggest surprise was just how much Public Enemy kicked ass. They headlined Friday night and played "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" all the way through. And they were 100 times better than I ever expected. They alone were worth the price of admission. And that's for a festival that includes The Hold Steady and Les Savy, two of the best live bands going. But man, was Public Enemy good. So much energy with a band and multiple DJs and the S1Ws...and Flav and Chuck jumping all across the stage. Make all the fun you want of Flav (and I will too), but there is no better hype man ever. If Public Enemy ever comes you way, make ever effort to see them. You will not be disappointed.

Every once in awhile there is a band that comes along that is just perfect for you at the particular time in your life. At this time, that band is The Hold Steady. While it's likely I would have enjoyed them 10 years ago or 10 years from now, there just seems something so right about them right now.

With The Hold Steady on the cusp of mainstream success, now seems like the time to bring this up. It will be interesting to see whether they follow more in the footsteps of Modest Mouse (couple minor hits) or Wilco/Flaming Lips (large dedicated fan base). I would think it would be more of the latter, though there are hits aplenty on "Stay Positive".

So I am super psyched to watch The Hold Steady perform this Saturday at the Pitchfork Music Festival. I will be there singing along to all the incredible anthems. It is just hard to explain, so you really have to witness it in person. But to watch hundreds if not thousands of late 20s/30s men sing along is such a communal feeling. And I guess that's what I get from The Hold Steady. It is not unlike what I used to feel with Wilco. I guess larger venues and time will make that pass. Which is why I intend to enjoy my infatuation with The Hold Steady while it lasts. For right now, my favorite band is The Hold Steady. And I just can't stop listening to "Stay Positive".

My Weight Loss Secret

So I have not really been mentioning this, but I have been losing weight the last 6 years. While never obese, I had some LBS to lose. So I made it a goal at the beginning of the year to get in shape and lose enough weight so I never have to lose that much again. While not completely done, I have accomplished my initial goal. I have lost at least 40 lbs - I say at least because I had to change scales early on because the initial one was a sucky Ikea cheap ass one.

Anyway, I am not here to say how easy it was for me. For it really wasn't. It only happened so fast because I had the ability to make it a priority. So here is my secret to my weight loss:

1 - Keep a food journal and determine a target daily calorie intake.
2 - Exercise like a mofo, doing whatever is most fun/easiest for you. Me, I can always run. Even when I am in bad shape, I can run a mile or two. So I just did 50 minutes of cardio every day. Well, I made sure to do it at least 5 times a week.
3 - Average 100 ab crunches a week

So now that I'm sorta done with my weight loss, it's time to tackle other pressing issues. At some point soon I may list some of these here. This will be more to push me than anything else.

Just Noticing...

Apparently ESPN now devotes about 5-10 minutes of an hour Sportscenter to highlights. The rest appears to be gimmicks to appeal to dumb people. Seriously, who likes these gimmicks like Titletown USA or Who's Now? And now they have some picture of the week that actual people vote on. Maybe I was young and naive but I actually remember ESPN being informative. Now, it has just become all Boo-Yahh all the time.

I could probably count on 1 hand the number of people I can stand on ESPN. Just on Baseball Tonight you have John Kruk, Eric Young, Chris Singleton, and Fernando Vina. It is almost as if they are actively trying to get the most annoying and least informative group ever. Then there is habitual stealing hack Jason Stark*, who adds nothing. If it were not for Peter Gammons, Buster Olney, and sometimes Tim Kurkjian there would be no reason to watch. Sometimes I feel like smashing my TV...the stupidity, it burns!

Seems like some millionaire could make a shitload of money by creating an alternative to ESPN. There are legions of dedicated sports fans desperate for something better than ESPN. And that bar is so low.

* My friend wrote a monthly article for ESPN Insider a few years ago. It involved stats and was very very good. On multiple occasions, Jason Stark's article on the free area just happened to replicate the same analysis.

Over the last 2 days I have had the misfortune of listening to Lou Dobbs as I change in my gym. Luckily it was only for a couple minutes. Still, Lou Dobbs is crazy. And it is so telling of our media that this guy is considered center. I guess compared to the majority of other wackos with a megaphone on the TV or radio, then Lou Dobbs is in the center. But if you actually listen to him, his views are decidedly to the right of center. Not to mention, he does not seem to be very perceptive. He's just a little man afraid of the evil dark skinned men who are going to ruin his precious world.

I am so digging the new The Hold Steady CD "Stay Positive". Bought it on Tuesday and can not stop listening to it. Such a great CD and sure to be near the top of many people's top 10 lists at the end of the year. I really hope this is the CD that breaks them into the mainstream. They are on Letterman tonight and are also featured in his skit, which is kinda cool. And I can't wait to see them Saturday at the Pitchfork Music Festival. I highly recommend the CD "Stay Positive" and should have more in about a week when I hopefully have more time.

I do not believe there should be any tests for presidential candidacy. In general, I trust the American people to do a good job of deciding what issues and knowledge are important and choose accordingly - Dubya is obviously an outlier (I hope). Of course, this assumes the media actually objectively provides this information to the public.

Yet there are certain skills and knowledge that should be troubling if a candidate did not have. For example, basic computer literacy. The fact that McCain does not have a working knowledge of computers or the Internet should be discussed by our media. Yet it gets scant mention in comparison to the latest manufactured Obama outrage (my God, can you believe what Jesse Jackson said!). Seriously, in the Year 2008 I expect my President to know the basics of computing. I am just not sure how you can live in this world over the past 30 years and not know how to use a computer. Just imagine the outrage if this were a Democrat.

Favorite Grunge CDs

OK, so Pitchfork kinda beat me to this (though theirs is only Sub Pop CDs). But I swear I am not copying their idea and have been meaning to post this idea for at least a week. As I get nostalgic about my childhood and early adulthood, I thought I would take a look back at my favorite CDs of the grunge eras. Couple rules here. First, I am going by what I own, listened to, or friends listened to. I am sure I am missing some great CDs that for one reason or another I have neglected to get into. Idea is not for me to re-evaluate the grunge era. Second, this is how I would rank them nowadays. So while I may have been a huge Pearl Jam fan then, I am not much of a fan today. My rankings will reflect current tastes and how I think the music has held up. Third, I am strictly somewhat close to grunge and not music during the time frame. This means bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and Afghan Whigs are considered even if a stretch while a band like Pavement will not be included.

1 - In Utero - Nirvana

The only flaw I find in this CD is "Rape Me". Besides that, just a dark, sinister, and aggressive CD. Quite the artistic achievement. I still marvel that Geffen allowed them to follow-up Nevermind with this. In my opinion, the best CD of the grunge era.

2 - Superunknown - Soundgarden

Probably the band that most represents the trademark sound of grunge. With Superunknown, they traded up and showcased their Beatles influences, deploying some classic songs with a heck of a melodic touch. Their best CD and one of the best of the grunge era. Plus, Chris Cornell rules!!!

3 - Nevermind - Nirvana

Ok, I know from a historical standpoint this needs to be #1. But focusing on the music itself I place it here. Though there are 2 factors working against it. First, I have a hard time placing 2 CDs by the same band at the top. Second, it's impossible to gain any proper perspective when evaluating this CD. It's become something revolutionary that changed everything. Therefore, it's impossible to feel the same way about Smells Like Teen Spirit that you felt that first time. For worse, it's a part of our culture and is about more than the actual music. Still, this is a truly great CD that sounds great. It seems like almost every song has me turning up the volume as I scream away with Kurt.

4 Gentleman - The Afghan Whigs

That Greg Dulli could sure be a dick! Or I mean, he sure could write from the perspective of a dick. But he brought many facets to it. The straight up dickiness to the sensitive so I can f$ck you come-ons to the kick you out of the bed. I know Dulli and the Whigs were a polarizing band. But they did it for me. And while not exactly grunge, it's close enough that I had to include Gentleman.

5 - LP2 - Sunny Day Real Estate

Diary gets all the respect (deserved I might add), but LP2 is the one that did it for me. Might like Nirvana, what SDRE spawned makes it hard for proper evaluation. In fact, some might end up hating SDRE for the whining emo rock that came after them. But listening to Diary and LP2, it's easy to forget that emo can be a glorious thing if in the very capable hands of a band as tight and talented as SDRE.

6 - Bakesale - Sebadoh

Not sure if this exactly qualifies as grunge but it is close enough for me to include. This was Lou and Jason at the top of their game. I may prefer Bubble & Scrape but that's more a function of having Eric Gaffney's songs. They were close to stardom with this CD but just missed. But after so many years, this CD still kicks an unbelievable amount of ass. And that's from dorky guys in glasses singing songs about getting dumped or desperately trying to win the heart of that oddly attractive yet weird looking girl in the library.

7 - Foo Fighters - Foo Fighters

Dave Grohl has always been able to write catchy as hell songs. And while subsequent CDs aren't nearly as consistent, they are guaranteed to have a handful of insanely catchy songs. This was his chance to present his best songs he never got to release while manning the drums for Nirvana. I still remember when I first heard some of these songs - listening to some Pearl Jam radio thing - and being completely blown away. While I do not listen to the Foo Fighters much anymore, they are one band whose popularity I do not begrudge.

8 - Gish - Smashing Pumpkins

Those first 4 songs are still as powerful as the first listen. This was when there was still a difference between indie and major label releases. Where the mainstream did not really consider this a proper Smashing Pumpkins release. And before Billy embraced cancer sheik style. This CD just flat out kicks ass.

Siva - Smashing Pumpkins

9 - Cruise Yourself - Girls Against Boys

Another band that glimpsed at fame for a second before it passed them by. That was with their near hit off a different CD. Still strange to think they made it so close, with a 2 bass band and a singer with such a deep and cigarette and whiskey affected voice. Yet Cruise Yourself is a classic. I still listen to this CD from time to time and marvel at how well it holds up.

10 - Sweet Oblivion - The Screaming Trees

Truth be told, I'm a huge fan of Mark Lanegan. He's the rock god who never even became a rock star. And I will defend this CD to the death. It has hooks galore from "Nearly Lost You" to "Dollar Bill" to "Butterfly". In fact, I had to put this CD on as I'm typing.

The Media

Some days you just wonder - wtf can we do? And some weeks you feel like throwing your arms in the air and giving up. This was one of those weeks.

The biggest thought I constantly have is what can we do? I mean, the media just lies, when not just regurgitating the right wing propaganda machine's lies. Whether it's Andrea Mitchell lying that Clark made his comment honoring McCain's service after his "controversial" remark to all the major news organizations cropping or distorting or in some way changing the clip to benefit McCain's WATB narrative. There just seems to be no way to win. And then there's the "liberal" Washington Post and their disgusting hit piece on Obama today questioning his interest rate on his house. They apparently aren't aware that comparing Obama's rate to the average is somewhat meaningless. Two things: (1) the rate is highly dependent on credit scores, which they do not have access to (by all indications he would have exceptional credit). (2) the average implies that people are above and below that rate. If Obama was exceedingly below, well then yes we may have a story. He was not. Case closed. Not to mention these are the same news organizations that can not be bothered to scrutinize McCain's record on anything...and there's a lot if they didn't choose to look the other way.

That being said, we get it. We are not going to allow the media to select our President again. It is time for the pendulum to swing closer to the people and away from the corporations. Change takes time. It's coming. We must be patient and we must be viligant. But the right wing knows it and are lie rats in a corner...meaning this election will not be pretty. And their enablers who have benefitted from their years of rule, The Media, will do everything they can to elect St McCain. If not for them, then for their corporate conglomerate overlords who fund their multi-million dollar salaries, which are not interested in journalism but in keeping everyone dumb and happy while they rape this great land of ours. Well, we're fighting back and we won't let it continue anymore. There are better days ahead and while it might be hard to see, it's right around the corner.

Whenever people look back and wonder what the hell happened, all they need to do is look at the so-called media, especially the crazies and idiots who had an inordinate amount of influence. No one besides Bill Kristol may serve as a better representation than Hugh Hewitt, a gigantic ass clown who should never be allowed anywhere near the mainstream media.

From his June 25th broadcast:

HEWITT: By the way, I -- I'm still trying to find two tickets to the Ohio State-USC game. And none of the USC people will give up their tickets to me. I'd pay fair price. They -- they know Ohio State's gonna slaughter the Trojans. They know that they're gonna slaughter the Trojans, and therefore they do not want me there at the bloodbath, since it's probably the last football game we'll ever get to see before the United States gets blown up by the Islamists under Obama. I -- I would like to see Ohio State slaughter USC. This is what I'm living for right now. I'm keeping -- all the bad news, I just focus on the Ohio State upcoming slaughter of USC. Then, on one of the weekend shows he claimed it was taken out of context and meant as irony. Well, here's the definition of irony:

1. the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.
2. Literature.
a. a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated.
b. (esp. in contemporary writing) a manner of organizing a work so as to give full expression to contradictory or complementary impulses, attitudes, etc., esp. as a means of indicating detachment from a subject, theme, or emotion.
3. Socratic irony.
4. dramatic irony.
5. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.
6. the incongruity of this.
7. an objectively sardonic style of speech or writing.
8. an objectively or humorously sardonic utterance, disposition, quality, etc.

Let's see...the only definition you could even try to defend is humorous. Well, that is funny...to joke about the deaths of thousands of Americans under an Obama presidency. What is ironic is that Hewitt can make this assertion when:

1 - 9/11 happened under a Republican administration
2 - Thousands of Americans have died in a war in Iraq against a country that never attacked us lead by a Republican administration
