30 Days: Season 1 Review

Morgan Spurlock, "Mustache Man" is one interesting film maker. His Documentary, "Super Size Me" won numerous rewards and critical praise. It also educated us fat ass Americans about the dangers of eating large quantities of fast food (Spurlock eats only fast food for a month resulting in tiredness, weight gain, and rocketing cholesterol.).

Fast food is bad? Who knew?

Spurlock has since brought his 30 days' formula into a TV show format and used every day people. For 30 days, individuals will live a life which is radically different from their own challenging their belief systems and past perceptions.

It's a cool idea and it works for the most part. The first seasonhighlights included an average American living with devout Muslims in a heavily Arabic neighborhood, a military male living with a gay male in the gay section of San Francisco, and Spurlock and his girlfriend living on minimal wage.

Spurlock touts his mustache. Bitchin!

It's not to say that there were not a few weak episodes: a mom concerned about her college daughter's drinking, becomes a binge drinker herself for 30 days (Her daughter doesn't care.); and a guy takes a bunch of drugs in an attempt to recapture his youth. Even at it's worst, 30 Days is much better than any other reality TV program. Overall I give 30 Days Season 1 a B. The Muslim and Gay episode each deserve an A-.

30 Days is now in it's second season on FX, but since I am poor I will have to wait until it appears on Netflix. No doubt it has some interesting episodes in the work: 30 days in jail, 30 days in India working in a call center, etc... I recommend watching it if you have FX.

The 2nd season is far superior to the first. Morgan's prison episode alone is way better than anything in season 1.
