Larry Doby
Today marks the 59th anniversary of Larry Doby's first at bat in a major league game. For those who don't recognize the name, Larry Doby was the second African American to ever play in the major leagues and the first to play in the American League. Being a huge fan of the game and especially the history of the game, I wanted to take a moment to remember the Hall of Fame career of Larry Doby.

.283 BA, 1515 hits, 960 runs, 253 HRs, 973 RBIs in 13 seasons. While Jackie Robinson will always be remembered for breaking the color barrier in baseball, it's important to remember the contributions of Larry Doby. He might have been second, but I'm sure that didn't make it any easier on him. The level he was able to perform at in the midst of everything else makes him a remarkable baseball player.

I believe that the civil rights movement was not just a step forward for minorties, it was also a step forward for all of us. No longer would we have to hold onto ill feelings towards others races.
I salute Jakie Robinson, Larry Doby, and the others who risked their lives to play professional ball. They helped move our country in the right direction, almost 8 years before the civil rights movement.
Well, it began as a series of much needed corrections of outrageous discrimination against blacks in the South.
Unfortunately, in just a few years it degenerated into white guilt/black rage politics that continue to plague the nation today.
When I was a kid there was one guy who always claimed that I was racist because I didn't like him. I didn't like him, because he was a jerk who constantly accussed people of being racist. Who wants to be friends with a person like that?
Some day this stage will pass. I believe every generation gets a little bit better at handling it.
