Chicken or the Egg

I feel like the question which came first, the chicken or the egg, is being played out in the Middle East right now. Or at least the absurdity and childishness of someone who believes strongly in one side and won't waver at all. Watching and listening to self-proclaimed conservatives and/or supporters of the current administration over the past few days just leaves me shaking my head in disbelief. I don't want to hear anymore how Israel has a right to defend themselves from Hezbollah. It's not that they don't have that right, it's just we've passed that point. Both sides have passed that point. Too much back and forth has gone on that we've lost track on how many times one sides hit the other so I can attack them to make sure we're even.

It's comparable to a fight. Sure, if I get sucker-punched I have the right to retaliate and hit back. But after 10 minutes of fighting with eye gouging and biting from both sides, who can keep track of who has the right to attack the other. Who can say which side has been nastier and therefore deserves to get hit by their opponent. Now add in the fact that each combatant is attacking the bystanders instead of each other and it becomes even more difficult to justify their attacks. Yet the US sits idly by as this fight escalates into a street riot. And I constantly have to hear from these right wing pundits that Israel has the right to defend themselves. My guess is that these pundits would stand idly by while the street fight escalated. Better yet, they would be looking down at the fight from their penthouse apartment through binoculars stating the right of one opponent to defend themselves.

At some point it doesn't matter who started what or who got in the last blow or who deserves to get another attack because they fought the dirtiest or who has the moral authority or whatever rationale one can think up. Sometimes the best thing to do is to get the fighting to stop. Why is that so hard to see?
