Bell Labs does not "dig" Captain Crunch also known as John Draper. You can think of him as one of the original hackers. By tinkering with a tone generator and linking it to his phone system, he was able to reek havoc with Bell Lab's switching equipment. Draper, got the idea from a blind kid who was able to do the same thing with a whistle from a Cap'n Crunch cereal box.The tone generator became known as the "Blue Box" and the final design allowed users to place free phone calls to anywhere in the world. Bell Labs naturally filed charges and the Captain served some jail time where he invented one of the first word processors for the Apple II and IBM called EasyWriter. He's also became a close friend to Apple's Steve Wozniak.
